Not many people begin their career at their mother’s knee. But that’s exactly the early training cosmetics expert Karen Duncan was exposed to. It may not have been apparent to her at the time, but the skills she absorbed from her mother, Emmy Award-winning makeup artist Norma Gerson, led Karen to a successful career in her own right as a professional makeup artist and cosmetics scientist.

Her new approach to buying and applying make up began when she chose to study the chemical nature of cosmetics—knowledge that she has taken on the road as a sought-after speaker. She has received rave reviews for helping demystify the endless stream of products available on the market, by teaching consumers how to shop for products as well as application techniques.

An in-depth understanding of the mechanics of the products, their claims and ingredients provided her with the information she needed to buy and use the most effective products in her kit. “It all became so clear: I was a safe source of information. I wasn’t a salesperson but I was a professional. I would answer people’s questions based on all my research, trials and errors then they would go out and shop with greater confidence. Knowledge really was power to them,” Karen explains.
